Cornwall Landscape

Diaspora network for Cornwall, UK – creating connections across the globe for Cornwall’s business community.

Cornwall, UK, internationally renowned for its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant communities, is taking a bold step to build upon its global connections with the launch of a pilot diaspora programme led by Cornwall Trade and Investment – aimed at developing a pioneering network to foster collaboration and economic opportunities.

Nicola Lloyd, from Cornwall Trade & Investment says:

“Cornwall’s diaspora project, officially announced on St Piran’s Day, serves as a digital platform designed to unite Cornish people and enthusiasts around the world, irrespective of their geographical location. From Cornwall natives living abroad, to those with a deep affinity for Cornish culture or family connections, the network provides a virtual opportunity to forge meaningful connections.”

With its launch, the diaspora pilot for Cornwall aims to achieve several key objectives:

Cllr Louis Gardner, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Cornwall Council says:

“Cornwall invites Cornish people, descendants, enthusiasts, and friends from around the world to join the community and be part of this exciting journey of connection, and collaboration, particularly those who are connected to investment networks, can provide market intelligence for trade and export opportunities, and are able to provide introductions for Cornwall’s businesses across North America”.

The Cornish Diaspora extends beyond the UK to countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, Mexico, Panama, South Africa, Samoa, and Brazil. Between 1861 and 1901, an estimated 250,000 Cornish people emigrated abroad. Notably, pasties and saffron cakes have gained recognition among natives of Australia, the Caribbean, and the United States. The influence of Cornish culture is evident in the spread of brass bands, Cornish hymns, and the introduction of rugby union by Cornish miners, contributing to the development of rugby in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
